The QE2 Sprint Tri is traditionally the regions first open water Triathlon and the weather was spot on for both athletes and spectators; lovely sunny day, 13 degrees and very little wind for the 750m/24k/6k course. The warm shallow lake made for a great start to the race, especially for the novices as it makes what is normally the most nervous element that much nicer. 15yo Sean Wylie (OneLife) led the swim from the gun and exited the water and into T1 with a significant 53 second advantage over second placed Alex Smethurst (unattached) who was also first female closely followed by a big group.
Out on the bike course, always a favourite taking in the National Trust's Druridge Bay coastline, it was Elliot Gowland (Coalfields RT) who was laying down the power with fastest split of the day turning over a 3 minute deficit, entering T2 just a few seconds behind Wylie who just managed to hang onto the lead.
The event in set in the grounds of Woodhorn Museum, providing a great backdrop to the race and taking in the lake makes for a varied and interesting course. Phil Coulson (TRI) started the final leg 1:39 behind Gowland and ran though the field in front of him to take Gowland on the second lap and run out 40 seconds clear. Third place was David Turnbull (NE31 Tri) who also put in a very strong last leg (despite a marathon last weekend!) to move through the field off the bike just edging out Micheal Lavender (Coalfields RT) who said afterwards he just couldn't keep on the shoulder and had to back off. Wylie put in a great run to round up the top 5, a fantastic performance, the U20 in the region looks very healthy indeed!
Smethurst led from gun to tape in the female race with the best swim and bike splits. The race was for the rest of the top 5 places, with Georgia Campbell (Coalfields RT) taking second from Alison Dargie (TRI) in third with the fastest run split, both of whom over-took Kath Blakey (Cleveland Tri) on the run leg, with Angela Campbell (Coalfields RT) rounding off top 5.
Top teams were as follows:
1st - Coalfields RT (Elliot Gowland 2nd - Michael Lavendar 4th - Paul Somerville 10th)
2nd - One Life Racing - One Life Kids (Sean Wylie 5th - Mike Little 6th - Stuart Barr 17th)
3rd - Sun City Tri (Mark Head 8th - Gavin Richardson 13th - Gordon Stutchbury 14th)
