After the success of the 2010 QE2 challenge swim where 120 swimmers took part in the first event it is back! The QE2 Challenge swim will be the first of our Challenge swims in 2011. Open water swimming is an exciting new event in the UK and especially in Northumberland.
The venue is the QE2 Country Park which boasts a 16 hectare lake surrounded by developing woodland and open grasslands. The diverse and developing habitats around the lake now host a variety of birds, plants and mammals and the lake itself is host to both resident and migratory birds. The QE2 Lake is not exposed to current or tides so this makes the Challenge swim a very pleasant and enjoyable experience. The QE2 country park is situated approximately 14miles North of Newcastle Upon Tyne and 1 mile North of Ashington and this is our "Home" for open water swim training in the summer months.
How will the Challenge swim work: The swim will operate in a similar format as an Australian open water swim. Swimmers will be set off in waves of 120, so if you want to relax and take your time, let the more experienced swimmers go off first in your wave. The QE2 lake has great viewing for spectators all around the lake which provides for excellent support to all swimmers. Wetsuits are Mandatory for this event. The Swim starts in the water, but will finish on dry land when you cross the Timing Mat. Training sessions will be available prior to the event, the details will be posted on our website.
