Wow! What a great day out, weather was perfect for racing, 18oC lovely sunny skies and hardly any wind. Many thanks to you all for making today so much great fun and congratulations to the 69 new triathletes who completed their first triathlon, very well done and hope you now have the Tri bug.
Feedback from everyone was once again fabulous (please keep comments coming in, Facebook and Twitter details below) and this is down to great organisation with all the local tri clubs joining in to provide superb marshalling and support to everyone competing, making sure you finished with a big smile.
In the female race, it was local elite triathlete and hot favourite Emma Pearson (Tyne Tri) who took the overall winners' trophy home with Natalie Batey (T&W Fire Service) second with Venda Pollock (Alnwick Tri) in third. The swim was very close with Becki Newman (Tyne Tri) leading the swim in 5:08 but once out onto the bike Pearson took control and had a 38 second lead over Batey starting the run leg. Pearson extended her lead out on the run with a great time of 19:45. Pollock produced a great bike split to take third spot from Newman in fourth.
The male race also produced a fantastic spectacle. Paul Jones (F4L Coaching) led the swimmers out of the water in very close order and out on the leg and it was 'cat and mouse' all the way, with Ian Staines (NE31 Tri) with the fastest bike split of the day (32:38) first back into T2 closely followed the chasing pack. Andy Niven (Tri Northumberland) had his work cut out to close the deficit but by 3 lap of the run closed the gap and won by just 4 seconds from Staines with Michael Hindmarch (Tyne Tri) just edging out Jones in a very fast race for the line.
Special mention to 'The Don' (Shotton) who is still posting great times as the oldest competitor in his Super Vintage category, he's being doing Triathlon since before the ice age and said he can go faster this year...and did! Hope for us all. Great racing from a great guy. Keep Tri-ing Don as long you can.
