Ashington Triathlon 2012

Ashington Sprint Triathlon continues to grow in popularity each year attracting a large number of novices - who can now call themselves "triathletes!" – mixing it with those just returning with medals from the Europeans, and James Wilson ( who won silver medal at Eilat, Isreal, took the overall victory. Feedback from everyone was once again fabulous and this is down to great organisation and all the local tri clubs joining in to provide superb support to everyone competing, making sure they finished with a big smile.

The organisers grouped the Youth/Juniors, top females and top males making for some fantastic racing. The sport is clearly in excellent shape as U20 Mika Brown (Leeds & Bradford) and Jack Willis finished 6th & 7th overall, and Calum Johnson (Ryton Tri) took U20 3rd place and 12th overall; what fantastic talent!

In the Female race it was once again Emma Pearson (Absolute Tri Coaching) who took overall winners’ trophy home with Becki Newman (Tyne Tri) and Kerry Gowland (NE31 Tri) finishing 2nd & 3rd respoecitvely with Kyah Hall (Ryton Tri) finishing first U20 and 10th overall.

The senior males also produced a fantastic race. All swimmers exiting the water in very close order and out on the bike leg and it was "cat and mouse" all the way, and despite one of the fastest run splits of the day, David Turnbull (NE31 Tri) just couldn’t pull Wilson’s lead from the bike back and finished 18seconds behind. Daryl Oguona, (T&W Fire & Rescue Tri) finised 12 seconds ahead of Garry Walker (NE31 Tri) in 4th place, who also just returned from the European Championships.
